Step Over Apple Tree Support - A Simple Guide for Training Fruit Trees
Looking to grow apple trees in a small space? A step over apple tree support is the perfect solution. This low-growing, neatly trained tree structure is ideal for edging paths, borders or raised beds - combining beauty with productivity.
What Is a Step Over Apple Tree Support?
A step over support is a low framework that helps train apple trees to grow horizontally. It typically consists of sturdy posts and horizontal cross bars, creating a clear line for the branches to follow. This method allows you to enjoy a tidy, space-saving tree that produces fruit year after year.
What You’ll Need:
-
A Harrod Step Over Support 3m Starter Kit and the number of 1.5m extensions to complete your required run. It is recommended to have an upright support every 1.5m and the horizontal bar is at 45cm high.
Planting and Training Your Tree:
-
Planting: Use a young, bare-root apple tree and position it near a support post.
-
Securing: Gently tie the main stem to the post using a soft tree tie, allowing space for movement and growth.
-
Initial Pruning: In early spring, prune the stem just above the crossbar to encourage strong side shoots.
-
Tying Down: As the side shoots grow, tie two strong ones at a 45° angle, gradually lowering them until they sit horizontally along the crossbar.
Choosing a Training Method:
-
Cordon Method: Ideal for flexible trees. Slowly bend the main stem down and tie it to the crossbar, repeating the process as it grows.
-
Espalier Method: Better for less flexible trees. Cut the stem around 30cm high and train the new side shoots out horizontally in opposite directions.
Ongoing Care:
-
Pruning: Regularly trim vertical shoots from the horizontal branches to encourage fruiting spurs and maintain shape.
-
Tying: Keep tying down new growth to stay in line with the support.
-
Feeding: Feed annually with a balanced fertiliser to support strong growth and fruit production.
With the right step over apple tree support, you’ll enjoy a smart, productive tree that’s perfect for smaller garden spaces. Whether you choose the cordon or espalier method, careful training and regular care will help your tree thrive for years to come.
Product Reviews
The stepover frame arrived even sooner than expected - and looks splendid now it is in place.
I recently purchased the starter kit for my semi-dwarfing apple tree, but will certainly be extending it & purchasing more for elsewhere. Delivered quickly, it is a strong and sturdy piece of equipment and looks great too.....not ugly like some espalier products can be.
