A zipper is incorporated in the design which lines up with the main Popadome Frame zipper, ensuring easy access to the protected growing area.
I found the Popadome quick and easy to erect. I like the idea of the copper strip around the edge a very good idea. I can't comment on the performance as it is the first time I have used it and will only know at the end of the growing season.
Overall, this is a pretty good product and it even seems to stand up to our windy conditions. However, I had real difficulty with the poles. I ordered four domes. The end fastener of two of the 8 poles was missing and the elastic of another pole snapped as I was assembling the pole. But to give Harrod their due, they replaced all three immediately and all the domes are now doing their job in our raised beds. Pushing the poles through their "sleeves" is not particularly easy, but it is worth persevering and ensuring that you don't try to pull the poles through. Once constructed the domes appear to be sturdy - I haven't had them long enough to comment on slug control or how they withstand the elements.
I can't remember whether it's two or three winters, probably three, but this year I think I found the optimum combination. There are a few things I feel should be improved, the biggest being that these great tents do not fit either inside or outside 1m raised beds. I get two or three corners outside, and one in, to give the best tension around the edge of the bed. But that compromises the slug protection. The butterfly netting on its own through summer is perfect for keeping out cats, birds, pigeons and most butterflies. A few determined whites will squeeze through the netting if you've got brassicas inside, but it makes a quick check for eggs or caterpillars very much easier. The dragonflies do like to perch on the canes to sun themselves! Adding the insect mesh makes it pretty much impermeable to insects of all types. I tried the polythene cover both over the butterfly net on its own and over the fleece, but it makes the whole thing very prone to the slightest breeze lifting it all out. I tried putting the stretchy bird netting over both my metre-square beds to help keep the popadome covers on, but with a stiff breeze, they still go. Strong winds pull the pegs out very easily. My best solution this very windy winter was to throw out the polythene cover, and use the insect mesh over the fleece, pegging them with a different set of pegs from the popadome itself. If gales are forecast, add the fruit nettings too! But for crop protection in a raised bed, they are worth the effort. As a side benefit, if you have rats in your garden, and they come up in the beds, you can put 'special rat food' down under the popadome without fear of the birds getting to it. Hope that helps.
What The Press Say
What to Buy - Plastic Greenhouses - Top Pick
This comes with glass fibre poles, an easy access zip and a copper strip along the base to deter slugs and snails. The netting allows access for pollinating insects. A plastic cover can be bought separately. Top Pick: Best for Versatility. This is a good product in itself for keeping out birds and butterflies, but if you add the polythene cover it is an effective mini-greenhouse too.
