Acanthus mollis is commonly known as Bear's breeches or Brank ursine, it is a clump forming perennial with obovate (flat, egg-shaped) deeply-lobed, dark-green leaves to 1m (3ft) long. It produces tubular, 2-lipped white flowers 3.5-5cm (1½-2in) long in racemes 1m (3ft) long, often with purple-tinted stems.
Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F). Early in the year, typically January till end of March, herbaceous plants may be supplied in 9cm pots to ensure timely despatch.
