Starbucks v. Slugs...!
Dear Julian...

I woke up this morning and went out to check raise bed and seedlings - only to find a complete massacre of my radish seedlings, they were doing so well the day before as well apart from one small bite - I so wish I'd done something yesterday
im growing a small vegetable plot in square raised beds and have a lot of seedlings in a small area as i'm using the square foot gardening method as space is a premium.

I've added lots of used coffee ground around the sides and on the bed I grabbed from a local Starbucks and was wandering how effective this might be and If I might need to use pellets! - also as I'm new to growing my own veg....will my eaten radishes survive (e.g. grow new leaves etc...) or should i not hope for the best!

Many thanks
Matt

Dear Matt

I would not rely on old coffee only! It could be that the slugs are under the soil surface and come up at night to feed. I suggest you apply some Advanced Slug Killer pellets to the soil surface around the radishes.

The slugs when they surface will come into contact with them and be killed. It is also safe to wildlife and breaks down into a fertilizer and kills snails.

Unfortunately it’s unlikely that your slug-ravaged radish crop will recover to produce vegetables of any size but you could leave them and see – they’ve got two chances!

My advice would be to sow some more seeds and as radish is a fast-growing crop, sow little and often for a regular supply – you may have heard of the term succession sowing and that’s exactly what this is.
