Biological Pest Control
Biological Pest Control - using biological pest control as a method of controlling the most common - and destructive - garden pests such as slugs, aphids, whitefly, vine weevil and lawn-wrecking leatherjackets and chafer grubs - is rapidly gaining in popularity as gardeners wake up to just how an effective and natural soulution it is. Using naturally occuring nematodes, ladybirds and other predators allows you to give nature a helpling hand, and by introducing beneficial insect habitats you can encourage these little pest-munching friends to stick around.

Not only is this a proven method of pest control - nature is rarely wrong - but it's quick, clean, very easy and poses absoloutely no danger to children, pets or the environment; so make this year the time to enlist the help of hundreds of mini-marvels! To help you along the way, we've provided detailed information on when to apply the treatments and the habits of the pest you're attempting to wave goodbye to - just click on the products below to find out even more, and don't forget to view our very useful Nematode Application Chart.
Nemasys 50 Colony 'No Ant' Nematodes
Nemasys 50 Colony 'No Ant' Nematodes
£19.95
Ants can be more of a nuisance than a pest in the garden and when you've got more than a few to move on - you may have a large lawn or plenty of pots and containers - then our Nemasys 50 Colony 'No Ant' Nematodes will help evict the ant squatters. This nematode-based treatment doesn't kill the ants but they find the presence of the microscopic worms intolerable and will abandon their nests in the lawn and set up new residence a good distance away - leaving your lawn, house and garden an ant-free zone.

The Nemasys 50 Colony 'No Ant' Nematodes must be used in one application and for smaller ant colonies, we supply a smaller Nemasys 16 Colony ‘No Ants’ Nematode. Perfectly safe to use around children and pets, you'll find Nemasys 50 Colony 'No Ant' Nematodes is effective against both red and black ants and should be applied between April and September - when ant activity is visible - and when the soil temperature is in excess of 10°C (50°F). Full application instructions included.

Leatherjacket Killer
Leatherjacket Killer
from £9.95
Use our Leatherjacket Killer - also known as Ambush Leatherjacket Nematodes - to control leatherjackets, the larvae of the cranefly (often known as daddy longlegs) which hungrily feed on the roots of grass, turning lawns yellow in areas and often leading to secondary damage from birds and animals ripping up the lawns to feed on the juicy larvae.

Leatherjacket Killer nematodes are highly effective at killing small and young leatherjacket larvae and have coined the 'Ambush' name as after application, they lie in wait for leatherjacket larvae to pass nearby and then pounce! They enter and kill the leatherjackets within a couple of hours and should only be applied between late August and October, around 1-2 weeks after the first adult daddy longlegs have been spotted. Leatherjacket Killer is available in two pack sizes; one covers 12 square metres and the other 100 square metres.

Spider Mite Killer Sachets
Spider Mite Killer Sachets
from £9.95
A sachet containing 250 hungry predators (Amblyseius sp.) is the very last thing any spider mites lurking in your greenhouse would want to see and introducing our Spider Mite Killer Sachets will help give you the biological control edge in the season long battle against red spider mite, two-spotted spider mite, fruit-tree red spider mite and russet mites; in fact, this voracious predator will even dine on thrips.

We have sachets available for both indoor and outdoor use and their contents can help achieve early treatment and control of red spider mite in temperatures as low as 12°C, keeping your cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries and ornamental plants safe and avoiding the tell-tale yellowing foliage and webbing associated with spider mite infestations. Use our Savona Insect Killer Spray to control red mites which have just emerged from hibernation (and are tough for predators to eat) before introducing the Spider Mite Killer Sachets at the first sign of mite colonies.

To get the best results from your Spider Mite Killer Sachets, do not introduce until the first signs of spider mite.

Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer
Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer
from £8.95
Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer is just the thing for gardeners who have had their pot and border plants mysteriously killed by the underground, root-feeding menace of vine weevil larvae. These greedy grubs live in the soil, feed on plant roots - even burrowing into corms, tubers and rhizomes - and not surprisingly cause plants to wilt, keel over and even die.

Many ornamental plants and fruit bushes are affected by the larvae but the nematodes (Steinernema kraussei) which form the Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer soon hunt out and kill them when applied in March and autumn. Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer relies on the soil temperature being in excess of 5ºC so can be used at any time of year indoors, and is supplied in two pack sizes; Small (covers 12 sqm or roughly 150 pots) and Large (100 sqm).

We're also introducing, new for 2010, our Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer Double Pack; order just once and we'll send you a pack of Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer in March and another in the autumn for complete control. The Double Pack option saves you both having to re-order and a postage charge and is available in both Large and Small pack sizes.

Nemasys Caterpillar Killer
Nemasys Caterpillar Killer
£22.95
Each pack of Nemasys Caterpillar Killer contains 3 applications of 20 million naturally occurring beneficial nematodes (steinernema carpocapse) which will successfully control caterpillars on an area of up to 40 sq metres. Start applying Nemasys Caterpillar Killer in July and watch your garden population of these destructive pests decrease as the nematodes get to work; the caterpillar killer is supplied in three packs, and a pack a week should be applied for the three week period to ensure complete control.

This application rate ensures that caterpillars emerging from eggs over a few weeks will be caught by the treatment. Nemasys Caterpillar Killer can also be used against Sawfly larvae - even though they belong to a different insect family - as good results have been achieved on Gooseberry Sawfly larvae. Nemasys Caterpillar Killer must come into direct contact with the caterpillar and fits perfectly into any organic gardening set-up; it's also harmless to children, pets and wildlife.

Please Note: this item will be despatched at the optimum time for application which will now be from July 2010

Nemasys Codling Moth Killer
Nemasys Codling Moth Killer
£22.95
Nemasys Codling Moth Killer can be used as both a stand-alone or follow-up treatment to keep a check on codling moth larvae in the late summer and autumn. It's hats off to the 20 million, naturally occurring beneficial nematodes (steinernema carpocapse) contained in each pack as they do the hard work in killing the pupae of the codling moth on fruit trees and in the soil underneath.

Nemasys Codling Moth Killer is supplied in a pack of three treatments, each of which is applied weekly over a three week period; it can only be used between September and October and temperatures must be in excess of 14°C. Apply Nemasys Codling Moth Killer to the ground below the tree and to the tree trunk itself, where pupae overwinter - a single pack will treat up to 20 trees (40m2).

Please Note: this item will be despatched at the optimum time for application which will now be from September 2010

Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer
Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer
£29.95
Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer will put a stop to the lawn-decimating activities of Chafer Grubs and also help bring to a halt the secondary lawn damage cause by birds, foxes and badgers as they attempt to dig up the grubs to eat.

Due to the lifecycle of the chafer grubs, only a small application window for the Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer exists; you'll need to water in the tiny microscopic worms between late July to early Autumn and ensure temperatures are above 12ºC for a successful cull.

The nemotodes which form Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer will seek out the chafer grubs and attack the pest by entering natural body openings. Once inside, they release bacteria that stops the pest from feeding which quickly kills it. The nematodes then reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation which disperse and look for further prey. One pack of Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer treats up to 100 square metres of lawn with only 1 application required.

£23.95

Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer
Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer
£16.95
From the renowned range of Nemasys natural pest control comes Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer an you'll need it if your lawn has developed brown patches and the grass has little root growth as the chances are you’ve got leatherjackets (the larvae of the cranefly or daddy longlegs).

The prolific lawn pest is hunted down and killed by the nematode steinernema feltiae contained in Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer but there is a small window of opportunity to prevent this very-expensive-to-repair lawn damage; Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer applications should be made 1 - 2 weeks after the first craneflies have been spotted from late August onwards. An earlier treatment of Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer can be made in spring as long as soil temperatures are in excess of 10ºC but this application, although occasionally successful, is not as productive as the typical autumn dose.
