The March edition of County Living recently dropped on my doormat and as usual I turned straight to Stephanie Donaldson's 'In the Garden' feature, which included information on growing climbing peas. http://www.countryliving.co.uk/index.php/landing/9076
Illustrating the article on growing peas was a rather nice silhouetted image of peas forming in the pod
- very similar to an photo I'd taken in our own Harrod Horticultural Kitchen Garden http://www.harrodhorticultural.com/HarrodSite/pages/news/news.asp?sCCGroup=Kitchen%20Garden during 2006! I've reproduced the two images so you can see the likeness (my one is at the bottom)
and needless to say, I read the rest of the article with interest...mainly because we manufacture and supply pea and bean hoops and cross supports http://http://www.harrodhorticultural.com/HarrodSite/search/product/Garden+Netting%5FPlant+Support+Netting/GDN-387.htm which are ideal for supporting climbing peas.
This support frame is a real mainstay of our Kitchen Garden and has helped produce some wonderful crops of peas. I've found it worthwhile covering the young seedlings with anti-bird netting http://www.harrodhorticultural.com/HarrodSite/search/product/Garden+Netting%5FAnti+Bird+Netting/GDN-026.htm which I simply drape over the framework!
Keep a look out for more pea growing techniques we share with the celebrity gardeners - coming soon!
