And now, the Biggest Pest of All...!

In a recent survey, an incredible 88% of gardeners confessed to loathing slugs – and their partners in crime, snails – more than any other garden pest. These horrendous molluscs are responsible for damaging crops both above and below ground, with the chief culprits being the grey field, large black, garden and keeled slug, ably assisted by the garden and banded snails.

It is impossible to completely eradicate slugs and snails from the garden, and in the context of the food chain it is not desirable, so the challenge for the gardener is to control these pests, using the plethora of products available, as efficiently as possible.

But how…?

Hello! I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get rid of any slugs that are around at this time of year, in the hope that I can reduce the numbers when my plants take hold. I have heard that it is too cold to use nematodes in the winter?
Any advice would be most appreciated!

i'm not sure how to get rid of existing slugs old boy as I think they hide in soil overwinter. a friend of mine at the allotments puts out upside down pots where the slugs go and then he collects them up from there. you can't use nematodes yet, not till the soil is above 5 degrees centigrade. i keep finding black and brown slugs - does anyone know what type they are and if there are any differences? weblog is great. thanks!

I see lots of black slugs in my garden, but I've also seen some stripey light brown ones.

What are these ones and can I get rid of them the same way as the black ones?
