Work to rule and keep your seeds on the straight and narrow with this very useful Sneeboer Long Handled Rulemaker; 168cm (5'6") of hoe-typed tool perfect for creating long, even furrows for sowing or planting seedlings. Manufactured by hand in their own inimitiable style by Dutch tool making masters Sneeboer, the pointed and angled 15cm (6") deep blade carefully draws out a furrow for seeds and thanks to the long ash handle, painful back and knee aches caused by the usual bending or kneeling whilst working are eliminated. Endorsed by well-known garden writer Helen Yemm, the Rulemaker lends itself prefectly to the 'long reach' technique and allows you to work effectively and in comfort.

Long Reach Technique
Using the 'long reach' with this super long, lightweight tool will help you to work in comfort and more effectively. Standing side on to the plot just follow this simple handling tip: the rear hand grips the end of the tool handle with thumb aligned along the shaft at about waist height and work backwards and forwards. The leading hand grips the tool part way along the shaft and presses down.
Remember the other golden rules;
• Keep back straight - don't stoop
• Push/pull with the arms, never the back
• Slightly bend and flex the knees

Garden Fork - A perfectly proportioned Sneeboer stainless steel border fork, hand-forged in the finest stainless-steel and individually shaped, polished and sharpened by hand before being fitted with a fine quality ash handle. Sneeboer have always produced gardening forks with flat face tines and a 'V' shaped back in contrast to most forks which tend to be square or round.

The Sneeboer Garden Fork is made of the finest hand-forged stainless steel, with an ash handle. It comes with unique, sharpened, flat-faced tines that I found really useful when trying to dig out roots and work a very heavy soil. I would find one of these very handy. The fork is 113cm long with a head of 15cm, and weighs just under 4lb.

It’s an intriguing tool and would certainly be versatile. I’m a little concerned that there is only a staple holding the T-handle in place. The protruding shaft rivets may damage hands, though the handle is so long your hands are likely to be kept away from the head when working. It isn’t cheap but if the look and feel of your tools is important and you’re tall like me then this may be your choice. Build Quality: 4*, Value for Money: 3, Aesthetic Appeal: 5*

Occasionally the garden requires some heavy work in difficult conditions – the new Sneeboer Long Handled Fork and Mattock is tough enough to cope with almost all soil types and situations. This ingenious Sneeboer design pairs a robust mattock blade with a sharp, three-tined fork in a 23cm wide head, allowing you to both break up the most compacted soil and create a reasonable tilth - without changing tools. This double-purpose tool gets to grips with cultivating soil and decimating weeds and is particularly good when you need to work between plants.
The fork side is great for loosening up compacted soil and the mattock blade can chop away and dig in deeply for weeds as well as making seed drills or thinning out.
• The mattock blade measures 10cm long by 6.5cm wide and the fork tines are 10cm in length, with a 2.5cm gap between each.
• The solid ash handle is 150cm long, giving you ample opportunity to generate a hefty, soil-busting swing.
"I used this digging tool for breaking up the compacted soil in my borders, prior to planting. Its two heads meant I could use the forked side for breaking up clumps of earth, while the mattock made short work of digging the beds. The long handle enabled me to get to the ground beneath my shrubs, which is not so easy to reach with a spade. My only quibble is that I would have liked the blades to have been slightly bigger so that I could have covered a larger area in a shorter amount of time, although this may have impacted on manoevrability." Well, here’s the Sneeboer Long-Handled Weeding Finger and although equally adept at spot weeding, it also has the versatility that makes for accurate easy drill drawing in a seed bed. The long handle gives that extra bit of reach too (so perfect for raised bed tending or weeding specific areas such as corners or the back of borders).
