Sneeboer Dandelion Weeder

The 21cm long blade and 3cm width of the Sneeboer Dandelion Weeder enables long rooted weeds to be removed with ease from lawns without disturbing the surrounding area.

• The blade is sharp both on the tip and edges of the blade.

Last year I tested all manner of dandelion-removal gadgets for a magazine article – some were like giant corkscrews, others even more bizarre. None of them really got to the root of the problem in my heavy clay soil, and my victims invariably snapped off below ground and grew back to make the problem, eventually, twice as bad. Possibly the best of the bunch was a simple slim straight and exceptionally sharp trowel from Sneeboer with which I have removed numerous small plantlets (dande-cubs?)

I liked this one. The slim, extra long blade is sharp on each side as well as the tip, so as long as you dig down vertically you can actually turn the little trowel while it is in the soil and get all round the deep root and pull out a little plug of soil with it embedded within. Of course, it does mean getting down on your hands and knees, which is not ideal for some gardeners.

A few dandelions and other persistent weeds are starting to appear in gaps in the pointing of my old stone terrace. These need to be removed, as their roots can become difficult to shift. The best way to do this is with an old knife or a special dandelion-weeder (Harrod Horticultural has one for £26.95; 0845 402 5300, www.harrodhorticultural.com). To stop the weeds reappearing, I am going to repoint the gaps by scraping out all the loose soil and debris, then brushing in a dry mixture of four parts sand and one part cement..
