Purple-sprouting harvest!

Dear Martin...

Could you please tell me if I should cut the whole of a purple-sprouting broccoli or just the flower heads?

Thanks, Guy

Martin says...

Dear Guy

Many thanks for your recent enquiry concerning how to harvest your purple sprouting broccoli.

I’ve always snapped off the top 10cm (around 4”) of growth from the flowering shoots as this tends to encourage further side-shoots and florets to develop. Regular picking and harvesting will also persuade the plant to throw out extra shoots, hopefully prolonging your harvest.

I hope this answers your question and if you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me – and many thanks once again for your enquiry.

Martin
