Clean up to reduce next year's infestations......Autumn 2010Cleanup to reduce next year's infestations

Clean up the greenhouse and last chance to use nematodes...
Good hygiene in October and November in the garden can signigicantly help reduce pest and disease problems in the future.
Some pests like whitefly only need a few weeds to overwinter on, so make sure you clear out the greenhouse of weeds, especially under benches and on paths.
If you are keeping some stock plants over the winter, it is a good idea to hang some sticky traps up in the greenhouse.  This will help catch whitefly adults that are still flying on warmer days or in heated areas.  Try also to keep some contact actin spray handy to spray off adults you see.

Nematodes needed now.............September 2010!
Nematodes needed now for Vine Weevil and Leatherjackets

Vine weevil eggs are now developing into damaging larvae that feed on plant roots. If left un-treated they will feed on plant roots until the winter. They will then become dormant but will start feeding again next spring.  the use of nematodes against Vine weevil larvae is very effective, especially when treating pots and containers.
Leatherjackets - Daddy-long-legs or Crane flies tend to appear in large numbers in early September.  This is followed by a new generation of Leatherjacket grubs that develop from the eggs laid by these insects. The brown-grey grubs get to work eating grass and turf roots causing significant damage.

Exclusive New approach for carrot root fly...Soil temperatures should be warming up nicely by now and crops like Carrots may already have been sown. The traditional advice for avoiding carrot root fly damage is to delay sowing seeds so that you avoid the overwintering carrot root fly or that you cover carrots with fleece to prevent the carrot root fly from finding the carrots. There are some risks with this approach, what if you are trapping the carrot root fly in by covering the carrots with fleece?
