Biological Pest Control - Using Biological Pest Control as a method of controlling aphids (using one living organism to control another) is a rapidly expanding field - More and more people are using the predatory nematodes as a means of controlling both greenhouse and garden pests and aphids as they move towards Organic Gardening.
One of the toughest parts of organic gardening is protecting the garden from slugs and it has never been easier than using the nematode (phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) in Nemaslug Slug Killer - apply anytime from the beginning of the growing season.
Vine Weevils were voted as one of the top three garden pests in the RHS top-10 hit list of pests and the nematode (steinernema kraussei) in Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer is the perfect solution to kill vine weevil larvae present in the soil. Use outside during the Spring and Autumn and all year round in the Greenhouse.
Each pack of Nemasys Caterpillar Killer contains 3 applications of 20 million naturally occurring beneficial nematodes (steinernema carpocapse) which will successfully control caterpillars on an area of up to 40 sq metres - a natural product, harmless to children, pets and wildlife - apply when caterpillars are first seen on plants.
The Nemasys Codling Moth Killer is a natural product that is harmless to children, pets and wildlife. Each pack contains 3 sets of 20 million naturally occurring beneficial nematodes (steinernema carpocapse), and will treat up to 20 trees for codling moth. Apply during September/October to control the over wintering pupae.
Chafer grubs can decimate a lawn, and birds and large animals such as foxes and badgers will stop at nothing to dig them up and cause even more damage. The nematode (heterorhabditis megidis) in Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer should be applied during August and September while the young chafer grubs are active.
If your lawn has developed brown patches and the grass has little root growth, the chances are you’ve got leatherjackets (the larvae of the cranefly or daddy longlegs). The prolific lawn pest leatherjacket can be controlled by the nematode (steinernema feltia) in Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer. Applications should be made 1 - 2 weeks after the first craneflies have been spotted from late August onwards.
The parasitic wasp (encarsia formosa) is a very effective way to control whitefly, supplied as pupae on cards which are simply hung in a shady position throughout the crop - each application of encarsia is supplied on 25 hanging cards with approx 60 pupae on each card - a total of 1,500 pupae. Whitefly Control will be most effective when temperatures are at least 18 degrees C during the day and 14 degrees C at night
The parasitic wasp Encarsia formosa is a very effective way to control whitefly supplied as pupae on cards which are simply hung in a shady position throughout the crop, level with the lower leaves of the plants supplied as a repeat programme of Encarsia formosa, every two weeks over a six week period to ensure the pest is continually controlled.
The ladybird larvae feed on vast numbers of aphids (greenfly) daily, making them an effective predator for the control of aphids in the greenhouse environment. Apply when temperatures have reached 10 degrees. Supplied in a shaker tube containing 50 larvae.
The Red Spider Mite attacks many plants including tomatoes and ornamentals causing leaves to turn yellow - it is important to apply (phytoseiulus persimilis) in Spidermite Control as soon as the mites are detected. These predatory mites are capable of devouring large numbers of the spider mites and breed very rapidly. The persimilis mite is effective at a wide temperature range from 4 to 28 degrees and can also be used outdoors.
Wrapping up your valuable plants in an old woollen jumper is not quite as impractical as it sounds, as the Pot Duvets – available in both 19 and 25cm diameter sizes – are made from reclaimed wool and discarded jumpers! The material is 100% compostable and has excellent water retaining and insulating properties, keeping the soil moist and roots warm whilst creating a barrier for pests at the same time.

A heavy duty 100% polyethylene UV stabilised fine mesh that keeps out pests such as carrot fly, cabbage root fly, caterpillars, birds and other insects from Spring onwards. Can be laid directly over crops, protection frames or hoops to also provide protection against mild frosts, heavy rain, wind and hail.
"Question of the Week - How Long Do I Leave Fleece On? Q: My carrots have been covered with fleece since sowing. How long do I need to leave it in place to protect them from carrot fly? Bob McGregor, Bath A: Your carrots need protection for the whole of their growing period, Bob. Although the risk of carrot fly attack diminishes for part of summer, there are several hatches between late spring and autumn, so your crop could be attacked at any time during that period. Fleece does reduce, very slightly, the amount of the light reaching the plants but that should not reduce the yield and could enhance the quality of the carrots. A good alternative is fine but heavy duty mesh material which is ultraviolet resistant and long-lasting. Initial price can be high - starting at around £2.50 for 1m by 2m (3ft by 6ft) - but it lasts for several seasons. This mesh would also protect brassicas from caterpillar attack and is, of course, birdproof. A few metres of it would be a wise investment for anyone who grows food."
