Caterpillars
Caterpillars - sometimes you just have to hand it to Mother Nature; if we could sit down with all the 21st Century technology available to us and design the ulitmate plant-destroying machine, the chances are we'd come with a caterpillar - and the larvae of the both the Large and Small Cabbage White butterfly is arguably the most ravenous of all, leaving many a brassica grower staring at a skeleton of a cabbage, brussels sprout or broccoli plant! And it's not just vegetable growers who suffer at the jaws of these voracious larvae; fruit tree fans will be horrified to hear that the larvae of the codling and plum moths are very keen to eat their way to safety in the middle of developing apples and plums, making them very difficult to eradicate.

The news isn't all bad however - thanks to the caterpillar and moth killing nemtodes we stock, and the traps and monitors which give an early warning of potential problems, you can fight back and maybe enjoy your fruit and vegetables after all!

Learn more about caterpillars in the garden, the problems they cause to gardeners and which course of organic pest control action you should take from Julian Ives, the Harrod Horticultural Pest Control Expert

Codling Moth Trap
Codling Moth Trap
from £7.95
Codling Moth Traps can be used earlier in the year (from May onwards) to catch and monitor male codling moths. This helps warn of caterpillar attack later in the year and reduces the amount of fertilised females, leading to fewer caterpillars. If adult moths are caught in the Codling Moth Trap then follow up with our Nemasys Codling Moth Killer nematodes to seize control in early autumn.

The trap is uniquely designed without sticky inserts and requires only one pheromone lure per season. The Codling Moth Trap, which covers 1/2 acre or 16-20 trees, can be re-used each year and replacement lures are available for season after season use.

Plum Fruit Moth Trap
Plum Fruit Moth Trap
from £7.95
The Plum Fruit Moth Trap will go some way to helping you enjoy a harvest of plum, gage and damson without the presence of Plum Fruit Moth caterpillars; small, pinkish-white grubs with distinctive brown heads which burrow into fruit and give you an unpleasant surprise when eating.

The Plum Fruit Moth Trap is identical externally to the Codling Moth Trap but is supplied with a specially formulated pheromone which proves irresistible to male Plum Fruit Moths; these adult moths are trapped inside and the knock-on effect is less fertilised females and less caterpillars. Hang the trap in a tree in May and leave in place until August for best results, and the robust Plum Fruit Moth Trap will give season upon season of use as replacement lures (each one lasts a season) are available separately. Expect your Plum Fruit Moth Trap to cover an area of ½ an acre or between 16 to 20 trees.

Mighty Mite
Mighty Mite
£9.95
Mighty Mite is a real greenhouse, compost heap and even chicken coup superhero, ridding your garden soil of bad guys such as small vine weevil larvae, cutworms, fungus gnats (aka sciarid flies), springtails, caterpillars and the maggots of many pesky flies too!

Mighty Mite's alter-ego is Phoretic mite, a ravenous soil-dwelling predatory mite which reproduces rapidly and feeds on the above menu, making it an ideal natural ally for gardeners. Mighty mite will happily devour sciarid fly larvae in greenhouse compost and soil; it's happy to live in beds and borders outside and will also help rid the compost heap of springtails and fly maggots - and when the compost is spread around the garden, Mighty Mite goes too! This naturally occuring pest control solution is available in 500g shaker bottles, each of which will cover around 2m² and if you keep poultry, you'll be pleased to hear that Mighty Mite will feed on housefly larvae in chicken manure, keeping your chicken coup and house free from this annoying pest!

Pea Moth Trap
Pea Moth Trap
from £7.95
The Pea Moth Trap will is a great springboard for avoiding caterpillar-ridden peas as the pheromone-based trap helps attract and trap adult pea moths, giving you a good idea of their numbers and removing a few for good measure.

This handy 16cm high by 12cm wide reusable trap is simply hung in around the pea crop from late May until early July when adults are most active. The pheromone lure provided with the trap will last between 6 to 8 weeks – enough for one season – and purchasing a replacement lure means you can trap year after year. The trap will disrupt the pea moth mating activity, which leads to reduced egg laying and therefore less damaging caterpillars.

The pea moth trap sits perfectly in any organic pest control programme and covers a large area, typically 10 rows of peas measuring 20m in length - so if you can't sow early or late, use this trap to keep peas safe!

Nemasys Caterpillar Killer
Nemasys Caterpillar Killer
£22.95
Each pack of Nemasys Caterpillar Killer contains 3 applications of 20 million naturally occurring beneficial nematodes (steinernema carpocapse) which will successfully control caterpillars on an area of up to 40 sq metres. Start applying Nemasys Caterpillar Killer in July and watch your garden population of these destructive pests decrease as the nematodes get to work; the caterpillar killer is supplied in three packs, and a pack a week should be applied for the three week period to ensure complete control.

This application rate ensures that caterpillars emerging from eggs over a few weeks will be caught by the treatment. Nemasys Caterpillar Killer can also be used against Sawfly larvae - even though they belong to a different insect family - as good results have been achieved on Gooseberry Sawfly larvae. Nemasys Caterpillar Killer must come into direct contact with the caterpillar and fits perfectly into any organic gardening set-up; it's also harmless to children, pets and wildlife.
