Jobs for the Month: June

Sharon-Louise, Gardener at Stephanie's Kitchen Garden

This month I have been assessing many of the products used in the garden to give an opinion on their performance together with some tips and advice where pertinent.

OutSlugs barrier system - easy to use around raised beds, greenhouses, borders - makes an effective all-round barrier
Out Slugs - A really easy-to-use barrier method and currently in use around the basil bed. Next season I'll set this up around both the cold frame and the seed bed for sure.
Hydro Greenhouse Irrigation and Feeding System - Setting up can be a little tricky but once mastered this will be very effective.  I think this is definitely a product where extra tubing and accessories will be necessary in the near future.

Slug Copper Tape - certainly a favourite in the Kitchen Garden where I have used it around pots, planters, etc. and this time I'm trying it out on our new garden obelisks to fend the predators off my beans.

Slug Rings - Effective for small seedlings when planting out. Ensure your beds are well worked with level soil for the best effect.

I have been using different types of planters and towers for the strawberries this year and I would recommend using a moisture retentive and fertile growing medium.

Since using the products I have noticed that they appear slug and snail free in the sunny growing site and I'll keep watch for any developments.
Strawberry Planter
Seaweed Feed - recommended as a good 'all rounder'!

Slug Buggers have been used around plants and appears effective with regular applications from time to time.  I will keep you advised of this trial.

Seaweed Feed - a very good 'all round' solution to feeding plants in the garden and something I feel needs commending.  I shall be recommending more of these types of feeds to our New Products team.

Similarly, the Garlic spray is another stalwart - it benefits both the plants and deters pests.  I have noticed a reduction in the pest population in the garden compared to last season.  I have noticed that a lot of gardening experts are now extolling the virtues of these products.

Mini Raised Beds/Covers and Liners - Terrific products but with one proviso - use proper anchoring system pegs and protect against gusts of wind.

Mini Greenhouse - I set up this (soon to be new product) recently and it's a very handy size to fit on the raised beds.  Currently on trial in the Basil bed. I'll recommend it for our next catalogue.

The Organic Vegetable Grow Bags as endorsed by top vegetable grower and Chelsea multi Gold Medallist, Medwyn Williams, have done extremely well. I have grown tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, and a salad mix. I'll keep you advised with yields and you can see my results from the photographs taken on the patio:

Well, I shall carry on testing and keep you up to date in the coming months. Best wishes...
